History

 Georg III is the first king to become a client of Truefitt. The story of the Oldest Barbershop in the World, as recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records in April of 2000, began in fashionable Mayfair in 1805, the year of Nelson's victorious Battle at Cape Trafalgar, while King George III sat on England's throne and William Pitt the Younger served as its Prime Minister. That was an era when the high value was given to mastery, innovations and style.

Responding to the demands and standards of London's gentry, that considered good grooming the essential mark of the gentleman, on 21 October 1805 William Truefitt set up his first salon in London, Old Bond Street 40 and offered classic barbering and hairdressing services.

In 1831 sir Truefitt took part in British charity foundation of hairdressers. 1875 was marked with a start of commercial production of first hair care and development of signature perfumes collection. Page through novels by Charles Dickens and W. Thackeray and it becomes apparent that from its inception Truefitt played a key role in preparing Britain's gentry. Truefitt is mentioned throughout modern English literature as a bastion of style and the highest quality service - a tradition we are proud to continue today. During Truefitt's unique history the company has had the honor of serving the Monarchs of Great Britain throughout nine consecutive reigns. Truefitt has help a permission for Royal Court delivery and being considered as ‘By Royal Appointment' is still the envy of competitors.


The Royal connection is continued to this day: Truefitt hairdressers go to Buckingham Palace or Windsor for appointment with the Duke of Edinburgh while other members of Royal family attend Truefitt&Hill salon in Saint-James. 


Among Truefitt&Hill clients there are a lot of highly respected personalities that took part in writing the world history.

To say, almost all male members of the British Royal Family since George III, as well as numerous Royals of other European Courts, famous politicians such as William Gladstone, the Duke of Wellington, Sir Winston Churchill, and Field Marshal the Viscount Montgomery of Alamein. Many other legendary figures from the world of the arts and entertainment, who have also enjoyed Truefitt services, include Charles Dickens, William M Thackeray, Lord Byron, Oscar Wilde, Beau Brummell, Alfred Hitchcock, Laurence Olivier, Danny Kaye, as well as the celebrated John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Stewart Granger, Fred Astaire and Cary Grant.

 

The path of the company has faced new changes in 1935 with Truefitt's acquisition of the hairdressing business of Edwin S. Hill & Co. With this event, the modern era of Truefitt & Hill was born. Today the company is known as a producer of the finest quality traditional English fragrances, shaving requisites and grooming products. The names of products are evoking a long forgotten elegance and grandeur of a bygone era.
 

Status of Truefitt&Hill as the most well-known barbershop in the world specialized in classic shaving can be verified by its inclusion into «Courvoisier’s Book of The Best», guidebook “The best of London” and by frequent reference in British and international media including television, radio, newspapers and magazines.
